about

The idea of this song started a very long time ago, around 2007. I was still living in New York but I had come back to Kansas City for a month to look after my father, who was having some complications from an operation he'd just had due to lung cancer. My days were spent visiting my dad at the hospital and hanging out in the house that I grew up in. A friend of a friend was nice enough to give me this weird, black, acoustic guitar that had a hole in it. At night I’d sit on this big green couch and play guitar. I came up with the basic structure for this tune around that time. I had no idea that five years later, I’d be moving back to Kansas City and living in that very house. I think the submarine serves as a good motif for this song. There is a lot of below the surface stuff going on. There’s also something about what it is to be a man in there. My dad and I probably disagreed a great deal on that topic but I still respected and loved him for certain things. - Matthew Roth

lyrics

Back and forth.
Up and down.
Pull the cord.
Move around.

Dancing to the rhythm of your own routine.
Sucking down another tank of gasoline.
You calmly draw the curtains on your submarine
And feel your man.

Pick your nose.
Burn the grass.
Heat your hearse.
Break the glass.

Place another garbage on the garbage can.
Take another sandwich from the sandwich man.
You tightly tie your hair up with a rubber band
And feed your man.

Beep, beep, beep, beep. beep, beep, beep, beep.
Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep.
Beep, beep, beep, beep. beep, beep, beep, beep.
Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep.

Throw that rock.
Hide your hand.
Play the dirt.
Shake your can.

Every time you think you got it figured out
Pour a little tea out of your teapot spout
And hide your head of lettuce in a sauerkraut
And free your man.

Hide your head of lettuce.
Hid it in your hand.
Hide your head of lettuce.
Hide it in your hand.
Go
